Who we are
Big Joe Appliance Repair Service is a family-owned appliance repair company based in San Diego, CA. We have repaired home and commercial appliances across San Diego County since 2017. We are not a franchise: the owner personally handles premium jobs and oversees dispatch — two technical degrees and a lifetime of taking things apart to understand how they work. We do not sell appliances and we do not push replacements. Our job is to repair what you already own, in your kitchen, and to tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it.
Three teams, not one generalist
Most appliance companies send one generalist to every job. We don’t work that way. We run separate teams: one for premium refrigeration and cooking — Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele, BlueStar — one for commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment, and one for standard household appliances. Three of our eight technicians work exclusively on sealed systems: compressors, condensers, evaporators and refrigerant work. Our technicians are trained on Sub-Zero and Wolf systems, EPA-certified for all refrigerant types, with ongoing manufacturer training and new trainings in the office every two weeks. Nothing gets subcontracted — every repair is done by our own team.
Our own workshop and parts warehouse
Heavy premium components — compressors, condensers, gaskets — are stocked, not ordered. When a fault is difficult to reproduce on site, we bring the unit to our bench for extended testing, confirm the repair holds, and deliver it back. That is why most repairs are finished within three days of the first visit, and simple jobs the same day: our technicians carry the common parts — drain pumps, fan motors, igniters — in the van.
Sub-Zero rebuilds — when everyone else says replace
When a Sub-Zero built-in reaches 15–20 years, most companies won’t touch it. We rebuild it instead: a full rebuild replaces the sealed system, compressor, gaskets, evaporator fan and control board — every internal component of the fridge and freezer sections — using genuine OEM parts. You keep the cabinet and the panels that match your kitchen, and the work carries a 3-year warranty. For a built-in that cost $12,000–$18,000 to install, a rebuild is usually a fraction of replacement — with no cabinetry work, no re-fitting, no weeks without a refrigerator.
